Sohini shines in Manipur

Bhubaneswar: Sohini S Mohanty of Odisha won Thursday both the U-12 girls’ singles and doubles titles of the AITA Championship Series tennis tournament, at Manipur.

In singles, Sohini defeated local Yumnam Thoibi 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets while in the doubles she partnered L Nandini Chanu to beat Thoibi and MNC Sanareima 6-2, 6-2.

 

Sradhanjali appointed

The AIFF has appointed Sradhanjali Samantray of Odisha as the scout for the national junior girls’ football team, Football Association of Odisha (FAO) announced in a statement, Friday. Sradhanjali, a former captain of the Indian senior women’s football team and also an AFC B License holder has been entrusted with the task of selecting the best possible talents for the national team from the ensuing junior girls’ National Football Championships beginning August 20 at Goa.

The Mini World Cup football tournament organised by Jay Sriram Youth Club at Tudalaga village under Badagaon block in Sundargarh, started Friday. The final comes off, August 15.

Fifty six teams are participating in the tournament where the champions will bag a cash prize of Rs 30,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 20,000. The losing semifinalists will get Rs 5,000 each.

 Padmini triumphs

IM Padmini Rout of Odisha continued her winning run while statemate IM Sidhant Mohapatra settled for a draw after their third round matches of the Abu Dhabi Masters chess tournament, Friday.

Padmini outclassed compatriot K Priyanka to share the joint third spot with two points in her kitty. Sidhant drew with FM Jeet Jain to share the fourth spot with 1.5 points.
