Ganjam: Police arrested one Bikram Das, who allegedly hacked his 55-year-old mother to death and then buried her body at a crematorium in Santoshpur Harijan Sahi village under Rambha police limits Wednesday evening.
According to reports, accused Bikram hacked his mother Jhampi Das with an axe.
He then buried the body at the crematorium near a cashew orchard close to the village in the night.
Jhampi’s son-in-law, Shankar Das, allegedly helped Bikram stuff the body in a gunny bag, the latter admitted before the police.
The incident came to light after the accused himself disclosed the matter before some of the co-villagers.
Alerted, a police team led by Rambha IIC Namita Nayak reached the spot and began a probe.
They took the accused to the cremation ground and the woman’s body was exhumed in the presence of Ganjam additional tehsildar Sanatan Mahalik, who is also the magistrate in-charge. Police spotted injury marks on the neck and face of the deceased. Apart from blood-soaked soil, police also seized the axe, crow bar and shovel used in the crime.
Police have registered a murder case in this connection, second officer Sunil Yadab said.
Accused Bikram (33) had married Bharati seven years ago, but she has been living with her parents for a long period. The couple has a six-year-old daughter, it was learnt.
