Sore over basic problems, locals threaten poll boycott

Kaptipada: The people of Labanyadeipur panchayat under Kaptipada block in Mayurbhanj district were reportedly upset over multiple basic problems in their villages.

They threatened that they would boycott the upcoming General Elections if the government fails to address their concerns.

Most of the residents fumed that benefits of all government programmes and schemes fail to reach them due to the casual attitude of the panchayat representatives and officials.

Sore over years of neglect, people of ward 10 and 11 staged protests in front of the block office. “If the administration does not take any step to carry forward development activities, we would take to the streets and even refrain from voting,” warned village heads Jay Murmu and Mangilal Singh.

They alleged that 48 widows have not been provided pension, while 302 people were deprived of toilets.

Besides, 49 poor families have been living in miserable conditions in the absence of houses, while 85 people were not covered under the National Food Security Act.

The villagers submitted a memorandum to block development officer (BDO) Rabindra Kumar Mallick, seeking immediate steps for fulfillment of their demands.

The BDO said he was not aware of the issues of the panchayat. Steps will be taken in this direction after holding talks with the villagers, the officer added.
