Squash squad settle for second successive silver

Jakarta: The Indian women’s squash team settled for a second successive silver medal going down to Hong Kong here, Saturday.

Sunayna Kuruvilla and India No.1 Joshna Chinappa lost their respective singles as the team suffered their second defeat against Hong Kong in a space of three days. India had also won the team silver four years ago at Incheon.

The first singles was between the weakest players in both teams with World No.88 Kuruvilla taking on 51st ranked Tze Lok Ho. The Indian had won when the two sides had clashed in the pool game, but Saturday she lost 8-11, 6-11, 12-10, 3-11.

Next up was a must-win match for India as Chinappa, faced familiar foe Annie Au. The Indian was completely outplayed by the World No.11 3-11, 9-11, 5-11 as Hong Kong wrapped up the gold.

For the record, the Indians played without a proper coach in the competition and relied on each other for tactical and technical advice.

Judokas floored

The Indian mixed judo team suffered a 0-4 loss against Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals on the final day of competitions in the 18th Asian Games here, Saturday. The team comprising Vijay Kumar Yadav, Harshdeep Singh Brar, Kalpana Devi Thoudam and Garima Choudhary were no match for Kazakhstan. In the elimination round of 16, India defeated Nepal 4-1 earlier Saturday.
