Balasore: The century-old Kuntula Kumari Sabat (KKS) Women’s College, the oldest and the only government run women’s college in Balasore district, is struggling due to staff shortage and lack of infrastructure.
Named after Oriya poetess Kuntala Kumari Sabat, the college is facing neglect as almost 50 per cent of the teacher posts are lying unfilled since years. The college, established in 1960, is at present operating with guest teachers.
Unlike regular teachers, guest teachers do not pay any attention to the needs of the college or students. This has not only affected the development of the college, but has also doomed the future of its students.
The college which is affiliated to the Fakir Mohan University of Balasore, has 1248 students in Plus II Arts and Science streams. Similarly, there are 160 students in Plus III Arts and Science. But it has only 27 regular teachers although 52 posts of teachers have been sanctioned for Plus II and Plus III. Around 22 guest teachers have been hired to teach various subjects.
The college is also facing a shortage of non-teaching staff. The college office is running without a head clerk and is managed by a clerk and another clerk posted on deputation.
The NCC unit in the college was wound up four years ago. Although the college has a gymnasium it has never functioned.
Principal Kailashnath Swain said, “We have engaged guest teachers as adequate hands have not been appointed. Twenty two guest teachers have been hired. There is only one demonstrator for both the Botany and Zoology departments.”
I’m trying to get the government post more teachers in the college, he added.
