Bhubaneswar: The Textiles, Handlooms and Handicrafts department has planned to ensure that the weavers and their children complete matriculation through distance education.
The department has decided to take the help of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to ensure completion of Class X level (matriculation) education of the weavers’ community as many from the community in rural areas fail to leave their work to complete the education.
The department has planned to reimburse 75 per cent of the admission fee for women, SC, ST and BPL category weavers. The remaining 25 per cent of the fees would also be waived by the NIOS itself. The department believes that apart from sharpening the basic calculation skills of the weavers’ community, it will also make them eligible to apply for several job opportunities.
As per the guidelines, any weaver or his/her child with a Class VIII pass certificate or a self-certification of basic literacy skills can opt for the scheme and complete the matriculation through NIOS.
