Bhubaneswar: The STF of Odisha Police in the presence of scientific officers of the State Forensic Science Laboratory and members of State Pollution Control Board destroyed a bulk quantity of contraband ganja and brown sugar, Friday. STF sources here said a total of 147kg and 600g of ganja, and 1.48kg of brown sugar, seized from the possession of drug peddlers, was destroyed by the decision of the drug disposal committee and Bhubaneswar DSP. Following all due procedures, the contrabands were destroyed at a designated incinerator at Sani Clean Pvt Ltd in Tangiapada, Khurda. The seized contrabands were first authenticated by a concerned court and handed over to the drug disposal committee.
Earlier, the Orissa High Court passed a landmark judgment directing the sub-ordinate courts to dispose of the applications under section Sec 52A of NDPS Act, 1985, issuing a detailed SOP in this regard, as piling up of seized drugs has been a cause of concern for the STF.
Sources said till date the STF has disposed of around 64kg of brown sugar in 51 cases and more than 137quintals of ganja in 31 cases including today’s event. Similarly, to date, Odisha Police has disposed of more than 441MTs (4,41,000kg) of ganja and 79kg of brown sugar.
