Bhubaneswar: With the polls approaching, the DCP Traffic issued strong action against red signal violators, which will lead to seizure of vehicles as well as suspension of driving license for next three months.
Speaking of the enforcement drive, DCP Traffic PK Rout said Monday that stringent action will be taken against drunken driving, wrong-side driving, driving with hand-held devices and red light violators. “Vehicle jumping red light in the city will be seized and driving license of the violator will be suspended for three months as per the legal provisions. The violator will also be forwarded to court,” Rout said. Rout added that in cases of errant drivers jumping red signals at traffic junctions, the police could slap fines from Rs 7,000 to 12,000 on offenders. However, in case of non-payment of fine amount, they will be sent to jail for a three-month period.
Furthermore, he said that the action will come under the purview of Section 166 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This is a preemptive move to ensure the safety of riders against possible mishaps, he added. A special drive was conducted at AG square, Laxmisagar, Jaydev Vihar square and Khandagiri square in the first phase Monday evening. In the past two days, more than 40 four-wheelers and several two-wheelers were caught jumping signals with the police initiating action against 100-odd drivers.
