Students forced to cook, wash utensils in Koraput school

Laxmipur (Koraput): Students attend schools to study. But the situation in Model School in Goudaguda area under Laxmipur block in Koraput district is quite different. Here students instead, were asked to cook for guests attending a school event, Wednesday.

Resentment brewed high after guardians found the school authorities allegedly engaging students to cook. They were seen washing huge utensils, cutting vegetables and onions. Agitated parents then demanded action against the school headmistress.

According to sources, a function was organised in the school, Wednesday. Without engaging any cook, the school authorities forced the residential students to cook for the guests who attended the function. The children spent the entire day cooking rather than attending classes.

The district education officer expressed deep concern over the issue after coming to know about the matter. “While the State government is implementing various schemes in order to encourage tribal children undertake education, vested interests of the headmaster and the teachers are affecting them,” an angry guardian said.

Efforts to contact the headmistress for her side of the story did not materialise as she was unavailable.
