Students suffer from water and electricity shortage in colleges

Bhubaneswar: The city’s population, in the aftermath of Cyclone Fani, is suffering in many ways. The students of city colleges and universities are also facing huge problems such as lack of water and electricity.

Utkal University is suffering as all the departments and hostels of the university are damaged due to cyclone Fani. Students of the hostels in the university such as Gopabandhu Hostel, Madhusdhan Hostel, Fakir Mohan hostel and others are left with no electricity, no water and network.

The whole varsity is covered with fallen trees which blocks the roads of the varsity, students have to trudge to the nearby water hand-pump to collect water.

Sanjay Patnaik, a political science student and inmate of Madhusudhan Hostel said, “Since May 3 we have no water and electricity. The rooms of our hostel were damaged because of cyclone and since then we are stuck here. The varsity authority had asked the students to leave the hostel and go home but some of the students are still staying as they don’t have money to go home because the ATMs in the city are nt working.

Prateek Jena, another student said, “The varsity is providing meals since last few days but the Vice-Chancellor had asked them to go to home as the situation is not suitable for studies and nobody knows when the situation will be back to normal.

Many students are seen going to railway stations to go home as soon as the railways services resumed.

Similar is the fate of Ramadevi University where the students are vacating the hostel to go to home as they also have no electricity and water. The students were asked to stay at home till further notice was given to them.
