Students urge SP to order impartial probe into ragging

Allege some lecturers are behind the ‘fake charge’

Keonjhar: Upset over an incident of ragging at Government Degree Engineering College in Keonjhar which allegedly took place August 8, students of 4th year met SP Jaynarayan Pankaj Saturday and urged him to order an impartial probe into the matter.

Fourth year students were accused of ragging 3rd year students.  After the news incident became public, their career was in jeopardy.

They alleged that some lecturers were behind the incident and had instigated junior students to bring up false charges against the seniors. Following the incident, studies and peace in the college have hampered.

The 4th year students alleged that some 3rd year students had gone to the residence of the hostel superintendent to complaint about the frequent power cuts Wednesday night. A meeting was held at the hostel in the presence of the 3rd year students. In order that the meeting was not disturbed, food serving was stopped while a student fell sick all of a sudden, the senior students alleged.

They also said that the girl has stomach and acidity problem, but they were unnecessarily blamed for it.

Some junior students August 9 alleged that they were not allowed to eat Wednesday night in the hostel. One of the hungry students was admitted to the district headquarters hospital after falling sick due to acidity, a report said.

200 girl students have been staying in the college hostel, but they have been facing a lot of problems due to frequent power cuts. Water is not available to them when electricity goes out.

Some 3rd year students had taken up the issue with the hostel-in-charge Wednesday night. Before that, the 4th year students had apprised the hostel-in-charge of the problem.

It was alleged that the senior students were angry with junior students because the former did not like the latter to intimate the issue to the authorities again.

When the senior students asked the juniors about it, heated arguments ensured between them.

Thereafter, junior students had not taken dinner and alleged that their seniors had abused them and not allowed them to eat.

A complaint of ragging had been lodged with the hostel superintendent Thursday.  The college authorities had ordered a probe by an anti-ragging squad.
