Styling women is my passion: Banasmita Das

Bhubaneswar: There is no dearth of women entrepreneurs – some established, others trying to get a foothold in their business – in the capital city. All are smart, suave and intelligent running their business in competition with men. Banasmita Das, owner of Banno Jewellery and an exclusive bag shop at BMC Mall, is one such entrepreneur. In a tête-à-tête with Chaitali Shome of Orissa POST she talks at length on reasons for becoming an entrepreneur, the success of her brand Banno and her future plans. Excerpts:

How did Banno start?

Banno was my brainchild and it started in 2011 at Pal Heights. Subsequently, we opened shop in BMC Mall for my brand of art jewellery and handbags. As business expanded we took another shop where we exclusively deal with stylish and everyday handbags. We have an exclusive collection of branded bags available at reasonable prices.

What, according to you, is the reason behind the recent popularity of fashion jewellery?

Fashion Jewellery is very popular these days because it’s affordable and we have a wide range of products like exclusive kundan jewellery, American diamond jewellery, terracotta jewellery and much more. For professional ladies, there is jewellery for everyday light wear. In one sentence, I would like to say that Banno is a one-stop solution for all types of fashion jewellery.

Tell us something about your toy store?

Banno is also well-known in the market for its toy store where parents can find a variety of educative toys for their children. One can even customise these toys. We collaborate with toy manufacturers and we take orders for customised toys.

How would you place Banno as a fashion jewellery shop?

We are among the top three shops selling fashion jewellery in Bhubaneswar. Our goodwill and exclusive collection has helped us to retain our position in the market. Still it’s a fluctuating market. One can never predict success here. Nevertheless, we are trying to keep Banno in the top slot with aesthetic business sense.

Is it tough handling three shops in one mall?

There is nothing called difficult, it’s all in the mind. Of course, I do have the support of my husband, brother and my entire family. Besides I am a jewellery designer who has immaculate knowledge about both jewellery and lifestyle products.

What is the future plan for your Banno brand?

I am currently expanding my firm Banno by including readymade garments for kids. Besides, I have plans to make Banno a one-stop shop for ladies, where everything ladies need will be available under one roof.
