Suicide attack in Afghanistan, death toll rises to 16

Kabul: Afghan provincial spokesman Attahullah Khogyani said Wednesday that the death toll from a militant attack on a construction company near a main airport in the country’s east has risen to 16.

Khogyani, spokesman for the governor in eastern Nangarhar province, said that other than those killed, nine other people were wounded when the militants launched a suicide bombing attack and stormed the company near the airport outside Jalalabad. He stated the attack started around 5.00am and lasted until 10.30am.

Khogyani informed that there were five attackers. Two of them died while detonating their suicide vests while three others were shot and killed by the security forces. Fighting has ended but a clear-up operation is still underway.

Earlier an Afghan official said militants set off a suicide blast which killed four people.

No one has claimed immediately the attack but both the Taliban and the Islamic State (IS) group are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar province.
