Sundargarh’s family bastions breached

Sundargarh family bastions breached

Sundargarh: The most highlighting aspect of 2019 election verdict has been the near complete rejection of dynastic politics by the voters in Sundargarh district.

The four-time MLA George Tirkey from Biramitrapur Assembly Constituency was the Congress MP candidate this time. But Tirkey lost to BJP candidate Jual Oram by a margin of 18,829 votes.

George’s son Joseph Tirkey was contesting from Biramitrapur Assembly Constituency to save their traditional bastion. But the result went against both the father and son as Joseph lost the MLA seat.

In another such breach of family bastions, Congress’ veteran leader and former Chief Minister Hemanand Biswal’s two daughters— Sunita and Amita— lost from Sundargarh Lok Sabha and Sundargarh Assembly seat respectively.

It may be mentioned here that it was Sunita’s debut into politics and she was the Lok Sabha candidate of the Biju Janta Dal (BJD) for Sundargarh. However, her younger sister Amita was the MLA candidate of Congress for the Sundargarh Assembly Constituency.
