New Delhi/Srinagar: The Supreme Court allowed Wednesday law student Mohd Aleem Syed from Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi to visit his parents in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir and asked the police to provide him security and facilitate his visit. The top court asked the student to file an affidavit after visiting his parents.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer told senior advocate Sanjay Hegde that if Syed wants to travel Thursday to Anantnag then the court order will be made available to him in one hour.
Syed, in his plea filed through advocate Mrigank Prabhakar, said he is a permanent resident of Anantnag and since August 4-5, he has not received any information about his parents. He said that he suspects that his parents have been detained in Kashmir as he is not able to contact them by any means or manner.
Syed had submitted in his plea that there is a complete shutdown of Internet and phone services since the issuance of Presidential order and passage of Jammu and Kashmir (reorganisation) bill, 2019. He contended that this information blackout and restrictions on movement of people is violating the fundamental rights granted under the Indian Constitution.
Meanwhile high schools in the Kashmir Valley reopened Wednesday in areas where restrictions have been lifted but students kept away. There was limited staff presence also.
Higher secondary schools in the valley have been shut for over three weeks due to restrictions imposed in the state after its special status was revoked.
Jammu and Kashmir Director of Information and Public Relations Sehrish Asgar had said Tuesday in Srinagar that ‘the Education Department has decided to open all high schools in Kashmir Valley from tomorrow (Wednesday) in areas where relaxations have been provided.”
Officials said that restrictions on the movement of people have now been eased in 81 police station areas across the Valley. Briefing reporters about the status of schools, Director, Education Kashmir Younis Malik had said Tuesday that 3,037 primary schools and 774 middle schools have re-opened across the valley.
