Suspicion of witchcraft: Man axes two women, leaves step mother critical

Baripada: There is no let-up in killings of innocent people on suspicion of sorcery and witchcraft in tribal pockets of Mayurbhanj district. In such a gruesome act, a person axed two women to death and left another critical at Madhupur under Rairangpur sub-division Sunday.

Later, the accused has surrendered before police with the blood-stained axe used in the crime while police seized the bodies and sent it for autopsy.

Reports said, Shyam Baske is a resident of Madhupur. His wife had miscarriage five times. Shyam suspected that someone women along with his step mother have been hexing his wife.

Sunday, he suddenly attacked his step mother Jaba Baske with a bow and an arrow at noon. Jaba was critical. Later he picked up an axe and assaulted two other women – Karmi Murmu and Surya Baske, leading to their death on the spot.

After committing the crime, Shyam ran to the police station and surrendered. Jamda IIC Prafulla Kumar Mallick confirmed that the murders were fallout of suspicion from alleged sorcery.

He added that a case has been registered while the bodies were seized. Further investigation is on.
