Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police arrested Thursday the estranged boyfriend of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari for abetting the latter’s suicide in August last year.
Sweta died by suicide by hanging herself with a stole from the ceiling fan of her room at an apartment in Sailshree Vihar locality under Chandrasekharpur police limits August 19, 2022.
Police arrested the deceased techie’s boyfriend, Soumyajeet Mohapatra from his residence at Sambalpur and brought him here.
He was produced before the court which sent him to judicial custody. Based on the complaint lodged by the family members, police registered a case (No 283/22) and started an investigation.
Police examined the call detail records (CDR) of the victim and her boyfriend, the statements of the couple’s friends and family members.
It came to fore during the probe that the couple were in a live-in relationship till 2021 before Soumyajeet shifted to the hostel of a management college where he got admission for MBA.
The accused allegedly kept physical relationship with the victim with false assurances of marriage. However, their relationship soured after Soumyajeet shifted to the hostel. Sweta tried to save the relationship but in vain.
A mentally disturbed Sweta failed to bear the break-up and betrayal by her boyfriend.
Police sources revealed that Sweta made 15 phone calls to Soumyajeet before taking the extreme step. “We registered a case on the basis of the complaint lodged by Sushant Kyumar Dash under section 306 of the IPC. During the probe, we collected evidence by looking into different angles of the case. We also interrogated Sweta’s boyfriend at that time but he managed to get high court protection from any action. Later, we came to know that Sweta committed suicide due to betrayal by Soumyajeet. So we arrested Soumyjeet from Sambalpur today as we found that the protection granted by the court ended 15 days back,” revealed Ramesh Chandra Bishoi, ACP Zone VI. It should be stated here that immediately after Sweta’s death, her brother had blamed Soumyajeet.
