Govindapali/Mathili: Kadaguda Primary School under Khairaput block in Malkangiri district Wednesday observed Children’s Day in a very different way by remembering Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. This is an indication of how the teachers upon whom the responsibility of shaping the society rests, are imparting education in rural pockets.
Inside a class room, a portrait of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru with some flowers was placed on a chair. A teacher of the school was seen describing the importance of Children’s Day while the students were listening to him with rapt attention.
The teacher however was narrating all about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose instead of Jawaharlal Nehru. To top it all, ‘Netaji Jayanti’ (Birthday celebration of Netaji) was written in Odia on the blackboard.
This was the scene of how Children’s day was observed at Kadaguda Primary School.
The way the day has been celebrated at the school has left the locals fumed. “If a teacher misguides students, what will be their future,” asked some villagers.
Echoing the same feelings, some others observed, “We respect teachers because we have faith on them that they make our children capable enough to serve the nation. But, it hurts us when we come to know that the teacher of Kadaguda Primary School does not know anything about the importance of such an auspicious day.”
If this is the level of education being imparted to the students at Khairaput block headquarters, it can easily be guessed as to how the students of the schools located in remote areas of this tribal dominated district are being taught.
On several occasions, leaders and officials are emphatically saying that education in tribal dominated areas has not progressed as it should have. “If teachers like the one at Kadaguda Primary School are entrusted with the job of educating children, how can the level of education be improved,” asked some locals.
When contacted, Khairaput block education officer (BEO) said that he was made aware of the shameful incident and appropriate step would be taken to reprimand the teacher after inquiry,” he added.
