Semiliguda: Learning Mathematics and English will soon become fun for the students of upper primary schools in Koraput and Mayurbhanj districts with the introduction of ‘Learning by Doing’ method under the newly-launched ‘Mission Suvidya’ scheme of the Odisha government. The students of Class-II to Class-V will not be afraid anymore to learn Mathematics and English as they will be able to learn the subjects in a playful manner through ‘learning and doing’. The students will be taught the subjects through methods which will facilitate mathematical thinking and love for English among the students.

This will also increase the interest for the subjects among the students. The scheme was launched by the Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department on a pilot basis in Mayurbhanj and Koraput districts under ‘Mission Suvidya’ scheme. The ST & SC Development department runs as many as 6,500 hostels with over 5.7 lakh students in Odisha.

‘Mission Suvidya’ scheme aims at providing a congenial atmosphere to all the inmates in a phased manner. It will guarantee quality services in safety and security, health, hygiene and food provisions for the students.

The matter came to fore after a five-day training camp for the teachers concluded at Ekalavya Residential Model School under Kunduli panchayat of this block, February 5. The camp was launched February 1 by the district welfare department in association with Akshara Foundation and People for Action, two voluntary outfits which cooperate and collaborate with the department to improve the learning outcomes of the students.

Over 40 teachers in Koraput district participated in this training programme. The teachers who underwent training will further impart the training to their counterparts in 14 blocks in the district.

Bijay Kumar Mohanty, Nalinikanta Mishra, Rajesh Kumar Biswal and Bhagirathi Satapathy joined as resource persons and imparted training to the participating teachers.

DWO Madhusmita Mohapatra, zonal head Gadadhar Behera, block extension officer Subrat Parida, district programme officer Santosh Kumar Das, DEO Pranab Kumar Pattanik, Principal Golak Chandra Mallick of Ekalavya Model Residential School attended the programme. Rajesh Sarangi, Kartik Sahu represented People for Action, Manas Kumar Swain and Prakash Kumar Sahu as technical consultants also partipated in the programme.
