Kendrapara: Tension prevailed after a Class-IX girl died in tree collapse near Urban Bank premises at Tinimuhani here late Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Sijal Bala, daughter of Sisir Bala of Kajala village and a student of Bharati Vidya Mandir in the town. The incident occurred after a large casuarina tree on the Urban Bank premises at Tinimuhani collapsed on her. The tree was being chopped down in the bank premises which collapsed and fell on her.
She was returning home from tuition when the mishap occurred Sunday. Family members rushed her in a critical condition to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted her to a private hospital in Cuttack where she succumbed during treatment late Sunday. The deceased’s father lodged a complaint at the Town police station.
Tension was palpable after the body was handed over to her family members Monday. Family members and villagers, demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh, staged a demonstration outside the bank for two hours.
They withdrew after the bank authorities in discussion with the district administration, police and the protesting family members and villagers announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the bereaved family and a job of clerk to the elder sister of the deceased.
Sub-collector Jyoti Shankar Mohapatra, DSP Kartik Chandra Mallick, Town police IIC Jyotiranjan Mohapatra and Urban Bank’s Sushil Kumar Samal participated in the discussion.
