Tension erupts at Banapur CHC after youth’s death

Balugaon: Tension prevailed at Banapur community health centre (CHC) under Balugaon police limits in Khurda district Sunday after a youth, subjected to electrocution was declared dead by the doctor. The deceased’s kin allegedly thrashed the doctor accusing him of medical negligence.

The deceased was identified as Prasant Sahoo (22) of the village.

According to reports, Prasant was doing household chores when he accidentally came in contact with a live electric wire and sustained serious burns.

Family members rescued him in a critical condition and rushed him to Banapur community health centre (CHC), where a doctor declared him brought dead upon arrival.

The deceased’s family claimed him to be alive and insisted the doctor, to refer the patient to another hospital. But, when the doctor denied referring a dead patient to another hospital, he was thrashed up by the irate family members of the deceased.

This spread tension as family members accused the doctor of declaring the youth dead, even as he was alive. Irate kin of Sahoo caught hold of the doctor and thrashed him black and blue for arriving at a conclusion without even checking on the patient.

They claimed that the youth was alive while he was brought to the CHC. However, the doctor declared him dead and did not check on his health, leading to his death. On the other hand, the doctor refuted the allegations and said that the youth had died when he reached the CHC.

After getting information, police reached the CHC and launched a probe. The body was seized and sent for autopsy.

Later, the doctor lodged a complaint with the local police, after which a police team reached the hospital in order to avoid more ruckus.

According to sources, the body has been sent to AIIMS hospital in Bhubaneswar for postmortem and a probe into this incident is underway.
