Tension over kid’s death due to alleged medical negligence

Nayagarh: Tension mounted on the district headquarters hospital (DHH) premises here after an 18-month-old girl died Tuesday due to medical negligence, a report said

The deceased was identified as Sangita, the only daughter of Litu and Rita Mohapatra of Bodapada village under Laxmiprasad panchayat of this block.

“My daughter died due to medical negligence of the hospital authorities,” alleged the girl’s father.

Meanwhile, locals locked of the hospital in protest and staged a sit-in demanding compensation.

According to reports, Sangita was diagnosed with high fever with saliva coming from her mouth in the wee hours of Tuesday. The family rushed her to the DHH and took the patient to room No-7 after collecting a ticket from the counter. However, no doctor was there to attend the patient. Later, a physician advised the family to get the girl admitted. But the patient was left unattended for over an hour and her condition deteriorated. The repeated plea of the family for immediate treatment fell on the deaf ears of the hospital authorities. The girl finally died due to lack of treatment, the family members alleged.

Protesting the alleged medical negligence, the family and other relatives of the girl staged dharna at the Mother and Child Health unit of the hospital seeking compensation. The effort of the Town police to pacify the family members didn’t yield result. They also demanded post-mortem of the body suspecting it to be a snakebite case.

The dharna was withdrawn after the hospital authorities promised compensation if the autopsy report confirmed it to be a snakebite case.

CDMO in-charge Dr Sweta Mohapatra said there was no negligence on the part of the hospital staff. The girl was gasping when brought to the hospital. The post-mortem report would reveal the exact cause of death, the CDMO said.
