Tension over labourer’s death in crusher unit

Baripada: Tension prevailed high at Sapanchua village near Khunta in Mayurbhanj district following the death of a stone crusher unit labourer after he came under the wheels of a jeep Monday.

The victim was identified as Bikartan Nayak (50) of Sapanchua village.

Angry locals and relatives of the deceased staged a road blockade, demanding necessary compensation and action against the jeep driver.

The mishap took place at the crusher unit while the labourers were on duty. The driver of Commander reportedly lost control over the wheels and ended up mowing down Bikartan.

Hundreds of locals including women and children picketed the crusher unit immediately after the incident. They also thrashed the driver of the jeep.

They blocked the Purunapani-Subarnamanjari road demanding immediate closure of the crusher unit which they claimed is operating without a license.

The deceased is survived by his wife, a minor son and a daughter.

Khunta police had reached the spot and have been trying to pacify the angry mob.
