Bargarh: Tension ran high Friday at Katapali village under Town Police limits in this district after an eight-month pregnant woman who suffered a gangrape attempt, died.
The victim, who was under treatment at Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), breathed her last at the hospital late Thursday night. Tension gripped the area after her body reached the village Friday morning.
“She was under immense stress due to repeated threats from the rapists. Moreover, the medical authorities in VIMSAR did not provide her with proper medical treatment,” claimed the victim’s husband.
According to the case diary, three youths attempted to gangrape the woman while she was working at a farm house near the village with her husband. The miscreants assaulted her husband and tried to gangrape the victim.
Luckily, the farm house owner reached the place and detained one of the accused while two others escaped. Soon after, villagers rushed to the spot and thrashed the three accused black and blue before handing them over to police.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim, police arrested the two absconders and produced the three in a court. Now, they are lodged in Bargarh sub-jail.
Since the unfortunate incident, the couple was getting death threats from kin of the three accused. The victim was under trauma and did not eat properly. As a result, family members had admitted her to the district headquarters hospital (DHH).
As there was no improvement in her health, she was shifted to VIMSAR for better treatment. However, she breathed her last Thursday night.
It may be noted here that, the victim was five-month pregnant when the accused tried to gangrape her. She was to deliver November 4. Her death triggered more tension as it was found during autopsy that she was bearing a male child.
Tension prevailed in the village till the time of filing this report.
