Balasore: Tension ran high Friday at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here over the death of a four-year-old girl allegedly due to negligence.
Parents of the deceased child staged a demonstration with the body, demanding action against the errant doctors.
Sources said, Laxmipriya, daughter of Prashant Rout of Suliapada village under Basta police limits was suffering from brain tumour. He consulted assistant surgeon Narayan Chandra Behera who allegedly advised him to take her to a private nursing home for surgery.
However, Prashant did not have the financial means to take his daughter to the nursing home and instead admitted her to the district hospital. Laxmipriya underwent surgery, Thursday at around four in the evening.
However, hours after surgery Laxmipriya failed to regain her senses and she was shifted to the ICU of Sishu Bhawan. But even then her condition did not improve. After midnight when Laxmipriya still remained unconscious, the parents contacted Dr Behera. The hospital authorities also informed the doctor about the critical condition of the patient but even then he did not turn up
With Laxmipriya’s condition deteriorating, a decision was taken at around 1.00am to shift her to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. But she breathed her last on the way.
Returning to the DHH, family members staged a demonstration at the hospital keeping the body on the road. Police officials are on the spot, trying to pacify the family members, it was learnt.
