Textbook crunch impairs Bhadrak schools

Tihidi: Textbooks for classes I to VIII have been provided to varius schools under Tihidi block of Bhadrak district. However, textbooks in six subjects of five classes have not reached the schools yet. Although the books were provided under Ujjwal and Utthana programme, 15,383 more textbooks are needed.

Notably, about 24,806 students are enrolled in 245 different schools under the block where the students need 1,35,135 textbooks. Till now, 1,09,705 textbooks have been provided to the students and 26,000 textbooks are required to meet the demand.

The English book of Class IV, Mathematics book of Class V, My English Reader book of Class VI, Bhasha Kalika-2 book of Class VII, Science and Sanskrit book of Class VIII are yet to be provided. Similarly, half of the required English textbooks for Class VII have reached Tihidi.

Likewise, under the Ujjwal and Utthana programme there was need for 71,896 textbooks for 21,000 students, but only 63,020 books were supplied. Notably, the textbooks handed over to Education Department have already been distributed among the students.

Responding to the issue, Assistant Block Education Officer Chittaranjan Tripathy said, “We have informed the higher-ups of our department about this. However, the remaining textbooks will be given to respective schools before the school reopen after summer vacation”.
