There is a saying that behind every successful man there is a woman. Well in most cases it is true. During any international sports tournaments the WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) attract a lot of attention. The camera pans on them, the scribes run after them for comments and at times it is they who bring the star quotient to the forefront.
Well the ongoing IPL is no exception. The cameras use every angle to focus on Sakshi Singh Dhoni whenever she cheers for Chennai Super Kings or Mahendra Singh Dhoni. There hasn’t been much scope for Anushka Sharma to cheer about either for Virat Kohli or Royal Challengers Bangalore, otherwise the cameras would have certainly focused on her. But then there have been plenty of WAGS being regularly in the limelight. The fact is that we don’t know many of them. Orissa POST takes a look at some of the WAGS who have also increased the star quotient of the tournament.
Jassym Lora (wife of KKR’s Andre Russell): A model by profession, Lora and Russell has been going steady for more than 15 years. They got engaged in 2014 and tied the knot recently. Whenever, Russell powers one out of the ground, the 28-year-old Lora can be seen cheering and jumping in the box meant for cricketers’ wives and girlfriends. Russell has time and again acknowledged that Lora is an inspiration for him. Ask any bowler who has faced Russell’s bludgeoning blade and they will certainly agree.
Candice Warner (wife of SRH’s David Warner): She won the Australian ‘Ironwoman’ contest a few years back, also worked as a life saver on Australian beaches and is a model by profession. Even before they tied the nuptial knot in 2015, the two had their first child in 2014. When David got involved in the ball-tampering controversy in South Africa, it was Candice who stood like a rock besides her husband. This time also she has been with her hubby in the IPL egging him on.
Danielle de Villiers (wife of RCB’s AB de Villiers): The two dated for five years before ABD proposed in front of the Taj Mahal in 2012 during South Africa’s tour of India. Danielle wanted to pursue a career in singing but all that went out of the window after she met ABD in 2007. She accompanies ABD on most tours and with the IPL being a long tournament she is always there to comfort and nurture her man. She is one of the most prominent wives in the cricket circuit.
Geeta Basra (wife of CSK’s Harbhajan Singh): The ‘Turbanator’ as Harbhajan is fondly called tied the nuptial knot with Geeta a couple of years back. But even before that happened, the two were seen regularly at cricket grounds. Geeta has acted in a few Hindi films, the first being ‘Dil Diya Hai’ with Emraan Hashmi in 2006. The actress however, now is content leading a family life and she was seen loudly cheering when the bowler got Chris Gayle in the inaugural game of this edition of the IPL.
Ayesha Mukherjee (wife of DC’s Shikhar Dhawan): She is 12 years older than her man, has three children, but most importantly can give any model a run for money. Ayesha is a constant feature in most of the games that her husband plays in. This IPL also has not been any exception and she has been present in all the games played by Delhi Capitals.
