Theft racket busted in Phulbani, police arrest five

Phulbani: Police busted Monday a racket, allegedly involved in the theft of many electrical appliances including government properties. Five people have been arrested in this connection, said a senior police official here.

The mastermind of the racket is Sagar Biswal, a resident of Salepur in Cuttack district. The others arrested are Mungulu Pradhan of Gunjuguda village, Alok Muni of Majuriguda village, Niranjan Kanhar of Pikana village and Maheswar Behera of Lambabadi village, police said.

Police have also seized from the accused computers, television sets, a generator, a xerox machine and a Swift Desire vehicle which was used to transport the stolen items, Phulbani SP, Shuvendu Patra told reporters. He added that investigations are on to find out whether others are associated with the gang.

In the last five months, more than 20 cases of theft of electronic items were lodged. This got the police to keep tabs on a few gangs and they finally closed in on this group. A special team led by Sameer Rout nabbed the culprits after conducting raids at various places, police said.

Officials informed that Sagar is the owner of a mobile shop and he used it to sell the stolen items. Among the items seized from the shop were seven computers, five CPUs, six LED TV sets, eight printers, seven inverters and other electrical appliances. Police said that they have managed to recover 80% of the stolen items.
