Themed expo enchants art lovers

BHUBANESWAR: A four-day solo art exhibition of artist Subhamaya Biswal was inaugurated by Padma Shri Sudarshan Sahoo at Soochana Bhawan here Monday.

Around 18 charcoal paintings were displayed under the theme of Go Mata or Holy cow. Some other paintings on goat and ox among others also featured at the expo. Interacting with Orissa Post Biswal said, “It took around 3 months to create these 18 charcoal paintings. I was inspired by Manas Ranjan Jena who has been my guru and inspiration.”

The exhibition was marked by the creative use of thinner lines of charcoal that has highlighted subjects like a cow having a kettle in her belly and a tea glass beneath it which elucidates her objectivity in the painting. The use of thumb pressure has enriched these paintings.

It’s to be noted that this is the second solo exhibition of Subhamay. Art critic Manasi Panda said, “It’s mesmerising to witness such a beautiful and engaging charcoal work by this young artist. The future of charcoal art is certainly bright. More such solo works should come forward for artists of this genre to shine.”

Manas Ranjan Jena also stressed on the need of transparency in a charcoal work which he feels is evident in Subhamay’s work. Nalini Sagar, an art connoisseur who has been buying and collecting charcoal paintings, said, “The theme is quite new and the subjects are depicted beautifully. The exhibition is mesmerising.”

Padmashri Prabhakar Maharana was also present on the occasion. Students of various art colleges also visited the show. The exhibition is slated to be conducted from 10 am to 7 pm till Thursday.
