Today, portrayal of physical intimacy has become a very common feature in movies and TV shows. Actors are asked to bare it all and in the process with their muscles and curves, they become the fantasies of millions. Hunks like George Clooney and beauties like Julia Roberts continue to haunt the mind of women and men long after they have stepped out of the movie halls.
One would think that in the 21st century actors and actresses wouldn’t have any inhibitions baring it all. But to tell the truth many of these Hollywood actors do not like filming sex scenes. They find it awkward, boring and at times strenuous because it takes long hours to film the scene properly.
Orissa POST takes a look at some of the Hollywood actors who do not like to shoot very intimate scenes.
Kristen Stewart: For Twilight star Kristen Stewart, sex scenes can be very strenuous. It becomes very hard when the scene is touted as the turning point in the chain of movements that the movie portrays. “On Twilight we (she and her then boyfriend Robert Pattinson) had to do the most epic intimate scene of all time,” Kristen Stewart was recently quoted as saying by ‘Harper’s Bazaar’. “It had to be transcendent and otherworldly, inhuman, better sex than you can possibly ever imagine, and we were like, ‘How do we live up to that?’ It was agony,” she added. Her story sums it all up because she was then shooting the scene with one of best hunks of all times… Robert Pattinson.
Shailene Woodley: The Spectacular Now (2013) and The Fault in Our Stars (2014) actress has lost her virginity many times in films. She doesn’t like it at all to shoot intimate scenes. “It’s always an awkward situation when you have to pretend to be intimate with someone that you’re not actually so,” Shailene Woodley recently told ‘Page Six’. “I feel very awkward doing such scenes… the people, the lights, the body angle, all makes it very nerve-wracking for me,” added Woodley.
Justin Timberlake: The actor had to portray physical intimacy in a number of scenes for the movie Friends with Benefits. Even though Justin Timberlake is a fantasy for millions of women around the world, he found doing the scenes ‘annoying’. “It’s actually kind of annoying. You’re there for 12 hours, it’s exhausting,” Justin Timberlake told ‘BBC’. “All those scenes revolve around the dialogue and physical humour is so tiring. At times you have to hold your body in a particular position for a long time and that really exhausts you. Forget the fun aspect, I don’t enjoy it all,” the actor added.
Mila Kunis: The Black Swan (2010) and Friends with Benefits (2011) actress is another Hollywood diva who doesn’t like filming sex scenes at all. “It’s hard to shoot for a sex scene, period. It doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, a male, a female. You’re with 100-something crew members, lighting you, re-positioning you,” Mila Kunis explained to ‘The Huffington Post’. “There’s no comfort level whatsoever,” Kunis added. Her candid confession shows the harrowing time the actors have go through while such scenes are shot. And at times the director and producer put in such a scene simply to attract the crowd.
Hugh Grant: For this Golden Globe Award winner actor, physical intimacy for the screen is simply ‘yucky’. The Notting Hill (1999) and A Very English Scandal (2018) has always found it very difficult shooting a very intimate scene. He may seem like a prototypical lady’s man, but even Hugh Grant struggles with making sex scenes feel real. “Love scenes are extremely difficult,” Hugh was quoted as saying by ‘W Magazine’. “You’re always within a millimetre of sentimentality and that is yucky.” According to Hugh Grand sex can be a great and intimate activity when two people are in love. But it can be messy and awkward if it is between two actors who are not in love.
Jennifer Lawrence: The Passengers (2016) actor felt really ‘vulnerable’ when shooting sex scenes with a married Chris Patt for the film. “I wanted the scenes to look good, to look real… but I was worried what it would be like to kiss a married man with whom I was not in love,” Jennifer Lawrence told the ‘Holywood Reporter’. “I knew I had to deliver a good performance and that is when I felt the most vulnerable,” she added.
James Mcavoy: This actor had a ‘nightmare’ while doing sex scenes with Angelina Jolie for Wanted (2008). “I always have this nightmare that I will have an orgasm when I am shooting such a scene and that would be so embarrassing,” James McAvoy told ‘The Daily Reporter’. I always try to avoid such scenes, but you know they seem to have become a permanent feature in movies I work in. Imagine having a nightmare for a intimate shoot with Angelina Jolie – one of the most fantasised women of all times.
Jennifer Lopez: Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez has made it clear that sex scenes are almost never the most fun to do. “Those scenes are just embarrassing,” Jennifer told E! News. “They are uncomfortable, but your job as an actress or an actor is to make it believable.” For her film The Boy Next Door (2015), J Lo had to do quite a bit of steamy stuff. Even so, the actress insisted that that stuff was usually embarrassing to film, especially as a part of your job. “Remember, you’re not doing this with your closest friends. You’re doing it with people you’d describe as colleagues.
