Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha have been one of the most successful pair in the annals of the Hindi film industry. What makes their bonding so special is that while Rekha’s birthday is October 10, Amitabh Bachchan’s is today (October 11). Both incidentally are Librans.
Amitabh and Rekha first came together in Do Anjaane (1976). The movie turned out to be a superhit. It was at this time only rumours started about their relationship.
There are many Amitabh-Rekha films which have remained timeless classics. However, the most-talked about Amitabh-Rekha film, even though not as big a success at the box offices is Silsila which delves into the relationship of the two. It was released August 14, 1981 and also featured Jaya Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar.
Amitabh and Rekha have never come out in the open regarding their relationship. The closest that one could hear from Rekha’s mouth was during a Simi Garewal interview. Well Rekha was asked whether she fell in love with Amitabh Bachchan. Her answer was Absolutely! Duh, that’s a dumb question! I’m yet to come across a man, woman, child, who can’t help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately and especially, hopelessly, in love with him. So why should I be singled out?
Every media house in the 1970s and 80s carried news about Amitabh and Rekha’s alleged relationship. There were speculation that the development had created immense problems in the marriage of Amitabh and Jaya Bacchan. But till date the marriage stands on solid ground.
