This region is famous for growing black apples

‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is a phrase everyone grew up hearing.

But did you know that there are more than 200 varieties of apples grown in more than 20 countries?

But there is one particular variety of apples that will leave you shocked.

When we picture an apple we imagine it to be different shades of red or green. But there’s one variety of apples that are black in colour. It is in fact a very dark shade of purple which is so dark it appears black.

This dark purple apple is also called Black Diamond Apple.

This rare apple is found in very few places. This apple grows only in the Tibetan region of Nyingchi. Here it is known as ‘Hua Niyu’. It is cultivated at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level.

Its unique color is due to the region’s high altitude. The temperature fluctuates wildly between day and night, with the apples being exposed to a lot of ultraviolet light, which is conducive to the dark skin. Belonging to the high-end segment of the market, the average Black Diamond Apple costs about 50 yuan (about 7.60 USD). Many farmers are reluctant to grow the fruit, since its maturity process can take up to eight years.
