Three students critical as unknown explosive goes off in Kandhamal school

Phulbani: Three students suffered serious injuries after an explosive allegedly brought by a student went off at a private English medium school at Rutungia under Baliguda police limits in Kandhamal district, Wednesday.

The incident occurred during recess at noon. Two of the injured students stated to be critical have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Phulbani. However, it remains to be ascertained how and where the concerned student found the explosive. The incident sparked tension and a shockwave among the parents and guardians.

All the injured were immediately rushed to Baliguda sub-divisional hospital but as the condition of two of them deteriorated, they were later shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Phulbani.

According to sources, one of the injured students who was residing in the school hostel and studying in Class VII had brought an explosive to the school. During recess, he was showing it to his friends when it exploded, leaving all three of them injured. Police launched an investigation but the school authorities were tightlipped on the issue refusing to speak.

The school authorities were clueless as to what the explosive was and how the incident occurred. They were learned to have questioned the students but the kids failed to speak anything on the issue as they were shocked and terrified.
