Chikiti: Every year, tidal waves affect many houses in Ramayapatna village under Chikiti block in Ganjam district. The real-time video of collapsing houses along the coastline a few days back has triggered extensive debate across the state.
In this connection, the Ganjam district administration had a sitting with the local villagers recently at Chikiti tehsil office to find a way out. A special technical team had visited Ramayapatna and collected data about the nature and volume of damage caused in the recent past.
A team of scientists of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, had also visited the village August 27. Meanwhile, Berhampur Sub-Collector Shinde Dattatreya Bhausaheb has taken stock of the situation.
Furthermore, Chikiti MLA Usha Devi and Berhampur MP Chandra Sekhar Sahu have given a commitment to resolve the issue soon, after discussing with the affected families.
On behalf of the district administration, a six-member committee under the leadership of tehsildar Haraprasad Bhoi has also assured the affected villagers that they would be rehabilitated.
However, there is a high possibility of more than 190 houses being completely washed away if tidal waves hit the village further. Till now, 27 families have been worst hit, and a report will be submitted to the Ganjam Collector in this regard, district expert committee sources said.
