‘Time to find the right combo’

ICC World Cup eight months away

MS Dhoni arrives for India’s practice session in Dubai, Friday

Dubai: The World Cup is still eight months away but India skipper Rohit Sharma said here Friday that the six-nation Asia Cup starting Saturday will give his side a chance to work towards a ‘perfect combination’ going into next year’s mega event.

Rohit said that the Asia Cup will certainly help all teams find the right combination ahead of the World Cup.

“In a way, you can say that. Every team want to go to the World Cup in a good frame of mind. But we shouldn’t be looking too far ahead. Obviously the Asia Cup gives every team an opportunity to get the combination right before the World Cup,” Rohit said.

However, during the captains’ press meet, the talented Mumbaikar said that it is better to take one game at a time.

“I won’t understand how Angie (Angelo Mathews), Sarfraz (Ahmed) or Mashrafe (Mortaza) are thinking. As the tournament progresses, we will get to know each others’ weaknesses and strengths and play accordingly,” Rohit pointed out.

“The World Cup is too far ahead. Before that a lot of players will get an opportunity to stake claim for a berth. But as of now, it is better to focus on one match at a time,” he added.

India begin their Asia Cup campaign September 18 against Hong Kong, before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan the next day. Rohit however, said the tournament is not just about one match.

“Pakistan have played some great cricket of late and we are looking forward to that clash. However, for us all matches are equally important as I feel each and every one will be quite competitive,” Rohit informed.

“The focus should be on the whole tournament because every nation is eyeing the title. Also for the first time, I am captaining in a full tournament and it’s exciting for me personally,” he added.
