TMC MP Derek O’Brien questioned by CBI in Saradha chit fund scam case

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’ Brien was questioned by the CBI in the Saradha ponzi scheme case here, Friday, sources in the probe agency said.

The quizmaster-turned-parliamentarian is being interrogated about some financial transactions in bank accounts related to the TMC mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’, they informed. Derek O’Brien is the publisher of the mouthpiece which appears in Bengali.

Derek O’Brien was summoned July 26 by CBI to join the investigation in the multi-crore chit fund scam and asked to appear before the investigating team in the first week of August.

But O’Brien had sought time from CBI as the Parliament was in session at the time and had said he would appear before the agency after the session ends August 7.

“As the Parliament session is over so he has gone to the CGO complex in the city for questioning,” a senior TMC leader said.

It should be mentioned here that Thursday the CBI had questioned another Trinamool Congress MP Shatabdi Roy. She had incidentally been the brand ambassador for the Saradha Group during the period 2011-14. She has also expressed the desire to return Rs 29 lakh that she had been paid during the period. However, both the CBI and the ED have remained mum on the issue.

Earlier reputed actor Mithun Chakrabarty who was also a brand ambassador of the same group, had returned close to Rs 1.50 crore which was paid to him by Saradha.
