Nuapada: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report (ATR) from Telangana’s Nalgonda District Collector over the alleged torture of 40 migrant labourers from Odisha.
The apex rights body also directed Odisha’s labour department to provide compensation to the victims and submit the report within six weeks.
The direction of the commission came in response to a petition filed by Bhawanipatna-based rights activist Dillip Kumar Das.
According to the petition, about 40 labourers, including 10 minors, of Ranimunda village under Khariar police limits in Nuapada district had gone to Katanguru Ramnagar area in Nalgonda district of Telangana in December 2017.
The labourers were engaged in works at a brick kiln. Subsequently, they were held captive and subjected to inhuman torture by the middlemen and the owner of the brick manufacturing unit.
Acting on the petition, the NHRC had issued notices to the Nalgonda District Collector and Odisha labour department in September last year. However, the District Collector had not submitted the report.
The Commission has reissued notices Wednesday, to the government officials concerned and asked them to submit ATR by March 25, 2019.
