Tortured migrant workers return home

Papadahandi (Nabarangpur): Eight bonded labourers, who had gone to Andhra Pradesh to earn their livelihood, returned home unpaid and tortured.

The labourers of Rajamatu under Papadahandi block were lured by middlemen with well paying jobs and taken to Pedapali in Andhra Pradesh in August. There, they were engaged at a brick kiln and forced to work for 12 hours a day.

When the workers sought their payments, they were told that the middlemen had taken their salaries in advance.

The migrants informed this to their families back home. With the help of the local labour department, the workers returned home Thursday.

They met the district labour officer and demanded action against the middlemen.

A bonded labourer Ranu Majhi of Kantamal under Papadahandi block, who had gone to Mumbai September 20, returned home after he tested positive for dengue as he had no money for treatment there.
