Berhampur, August 9: With lives of tourists visiting Gopalpur sea beach being put at risk due to regular attacks by miscreants, the state government is planning to introduce tourist policing system on the beach.

The beach off late has slipped into the hands of the anti-socials, who taking opportune of the slack security system pass lewd comments on women tourists and assaults their male counterparts on slightest resistance. This was stated here by superintendent of police Sarthak Sarangi here Sunday.

The project after coming into force will intensify and strengthen security system, bringing relief to scores of visiting tourists, he said. He added that plans are afoot to implement the tourist policing system which will act as a special cell of local police.

He said that he has received an order in this regard from the state government and has suggested names of some police officers for the tourist police. Moreover, the tourism department will cooperate with the tourist police to ensure an incident free visit for the tourists, he added.

Sources said lakhs of tourists from the state and outside visit Gopalpur beach every year. Even foreign tourists visit the place regularly for its charm and tranquil environment. However, tourists now-a-days do not feel safe visiting the place as they are hounded by anti-socials endangering their security.

created a melee for which the police had to pick them up and dropped them at railway station.

Similarly, a woman from Nilakanthnagar was molested by three youths while visiting the beach July 17. Locals caught one of them while two others managed to escape. A college girl visiting the beach was manhandled by two jawans of Army Air Defence College July 28. Police arrested both the jawans and produced them in a court. The rising incidents have triggered fear among the tourists and have adversely impacted the tourist inflow to the beach.
