Badasahi: Despite chill in most parts of hilly Mayurbhanj district, hordes of tourists continued to throng major tourist sites like Kakharua Baidyanath Peetha, Panu Dam, Maa Hingula Peetha and Haripurgad under Badasahi block.
Significantly, Haripurgad, the ancient capital of the erstwhile Mayurbhanj princely state, is being developed by the ASI with a special package.
Kakharua Baidyanath Shiva temple is located at Mantra, 12 km from the block headquarters. In the last few weeks, the shrine has been drawing huge crowds of devotees and tourists.
Tourists also visit nearby Maa Hingula Peetha in large numbers. A sprawling Sal forest near Hingula Peetha plays host to picnickers who gather in hordes every day. The high footfall of tourists has brightened the local traders’ business prospects.
Now, Haripurgad has reportedly emerged as another tourist draw, after the Central government has set up a special fund for its renovation and infrastructure development.
The 14th century fort is a rich archaeological treasure in the form of ruins. Tourists are attracted towards Rasikray temple, Laxminarayan temple, Ghodashala and Rajbati (palace) which make their presence in ruins.
Besides, picture postcard Panua Dam, 10 km from the block headquarters, is frequented by tourists who love to watch different species of birds flying around.
However, drinking water and stay facilities are main hurdles for attracting more tourists. Boating facility at the dam could become an added attraction.
Locals demand road connectivity, lighting and other necessary infrastructure development at those places.
