Angul: Angul transport and police officials have imposed steep penalties against law-breakers under the amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act 2019 of Central government.
According to RTO officials, the RTO and police personnel penalised 12 persons and imposed Rs. 13,000 fine on them till Sunday evening.
The Centre has amended the MV Act and has increased the fine amount manifolds to bring down accident deaths in the country.
Accident related deaths in Odisha increased by nearly 11 per cent in 2018 compared to 2017. While 4,790 accident deaths were reported in the state in 2017, the casualty figure shot to 5,315 in 2018.
The violators were given money receipts of the penalty amount and were asked to pay the fine within seven days at the police station or within 13 days at the RTO office. The penalty can be paid directly through their debit card or in cash on the spot.
That said, the machine based payment system has not yet been implemented in Angul district.
