Transport dept stricture on cops over illegal fine collection

The department highlighted that police personnel have no authority to collect fines on all 33 Sections of the MV Act

Cuttack: The Transport department has asked police personnel to collect fines from people for violating Sections 177, 179, 183 (1) and (2) of the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act and not for the other 30 sections.

The department has made it clear that the police personnel have no authority to collect fines on all 33 Sections of the MV Act.

In a letter to district superintendents of police (SPs) and deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), Transport Commissioner Sanjeev Panda asked police personnel to collect fines on Sections 177 (verification of driving licence and documents of vehicles), 179 (violation of traffic rules) and 183 (1) and (2) (speed driving) only.

As per the letter, only the assistant sub-inspector rank police officials can collect fines from commuters violating several sections of MV Act.

It was alleged that police officials were collecting fines on all Sections of the MV Act including overloading, lack of fitness certificates and other issues on which they have no authority.

“Police officials can only send prosecution reports against vehicle owners to courts for violation of all Sections of the MV Act excluding Sections 177, 179, 183 (1) and (2),” read the letter.
