Travel agent held for duping city industrialist

Bhubaneswar: The special squad of Commissionerate police Sunday arrested a conman from New Delhi who allegedly duped a Bhubaneswar-based industrialist of Rs 73 lakh on the pretext of making lavish arrangements for the engagement ceremony of his daughter in Dubai.

The accused, identified as Nalinikant Nanda, is a resident of Satyanagar under Kharavela Nagar police station limits here. Nanda who runs a travel agency, is also engaged in event management in the city.
According to police sources, industrialist Tranini Mohanty was planning to organise a party for the engagement ceremony of his daughter and scheduled the event for March 2 in Dubai. Consequently, he contacted the travel agency owned by Nanda to make all arrangements for the party including hotel booking, air travel arrangements and decorations at the venue. Nanda had earlier arranged air tickets for Mohanty on various occasions in the past.
Mohanty trusted Nanda and gave him the contract for the party. Nanda promised to book the hotels and air tickets for the ceremony and sought Rs73 lakh to make the preparations.
However, Nanda took the money and fled to New Delhi, but did not do the arrangements as promised by him.
Later, the industrialist filed a complaint with the Airfield Police station April 21. Police registered a case (123/18) against Nanda and arrested him in the National Capital, Sunday.
