Kantamal: A tusker died near Guchangi village in Kantamala forest range in the Boudh district after it came in contact with a high-tension live wire Wednesday morning. Its carcass was spotted near farmland by the villagers.
As per the villagers, the pachyderm came in contact with an 11KV live wire while roaming in the farmland and died on the spot after being electrocuted. They added that they heard the elephant trumpet twice in the morning. When the villagers followed the trumpet sound, they stumbled upon its carcass lying in a nearby field. On being informed, forest officials reached the spot and initiated a probe. DFO Debapriya Kampa reached the spot around 10 am Wednesday and investigated the matter.

After preliminary investigation it was found that the elephant died of electrocution after coming into contact with a live wire, said the DFO. An investigating team from Bhubaneswar will reach the spot and the details will be ascertained after the probe, he added. Meanwhile, veterinary doctor Bhabesh Kumar Behera from Kantamal reached the spot and conducted the post mortem after which the carcass was buried inside the forest.
Earlier Tuesday, an ailing tusker undergoing treatment died at Basiapada beat of Sadar range. According to Sambalpur DFO Viswanath Neelannavar, the ailing tusker around 20 years old got separated from its herd of 16 at Basiapada Nala of Sadar range and was roaming alone.
