Tusker kills an elderly woman in Angul

Angul: An elderly woman was trampled to death by a tusker at Taltaila village near Kanloi reserve forest under the Chhendipada forest range in this district Monday.

The woman has been identified as Khedi Majhi, 68, wife of Durjyadhan Majhi of Kanloi village.

The incident sparked tension in the locality as family members and villagers demanded compensation. However, forest department officials and police reached the spot and pacified the irked people after holding discussions with them.

Sources in the forest department said, the deceased and her daughter-in-law had gone to a cashew nut orchard near compartment seven of the forest Monday morning. As they were busy plucking nuts, they unwittingly came close to a tusker close by.

The elephant suddenly attacked. Even though Khedi’s daughter-in-law managed to escape unhurt, the former was not so fortunate. The wild animal caught hold of her with its trunk and trampled her to death.
