Tusker tramples child to death

Keonjhar/Raisuan: A tusker stormed into the house of a woman at Khuntakata village in Keonjhar district late Wednesday night and trampled her 9-year-old son to death.

The woman and her daughter were injured in the attack. The incident has triggered panic in the area. The deceased child was identified as Litu Pradhan.

According to reports, the elephant broke into the house of Ganeswar Dehury at 11 pm and dragged the kid out of the house. Eyewitnesses said that the child was screaming for help, when the animal trampled him to death in full view of the villagers and family members.

The elephant then attacked Ganeswar’s wife and daughter injuring them grievously. The two were initially admitted to Bansapal community health centre and later shifted to the district headquarters hospital as their condition deteriorated.

Angry over the incident, villagers staged a road blockade. Nayakote police rushed to the spot and held talks with agitators.

Forest range officer of Bhuyan and Juanga Pidhi, Muktikant Parida, took stock of the situation and placated the protesters.

Apprehending law and order problem, police were deployed in the village. The range officer assured that the bereaved family will be given compensation while the injured will be provided free treatment.
