Twin city sees 28.3% increase in rape cases

Bhubaneswar: Rape cases reported in the twin city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has increased in the year 2018 in comparison to last three years, Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said in a press meet here Wednesday.

Mohanty released the statistics of major crimes in both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Urban Police Districts (UPDs) under the Commissionerate Police. On an average, there has been 26.6 per cent rise in the number of rape cases in Bhubaneswar and 31.3 per cent in Cuttack, with a total of 28.3 per cent rise in the Commissionerate.

There has also been an increase in other nefarious activities such as murder, dacoity, robbery and road accidents with 7.5, 25, 5.8 and 8.9 per cent rise on an average respectively. A drop has been noticed in burglary, theft, swindling and rioting cases.

As per the law enforcement activities in 2018, 380 excise cases have been registered in Bhubaneswar and 384 people in possession of liquor have been arrested. Around 1507.147 litres of Foreign liquor (IMFL) and 3073.48 Illegally Distilled (ID) liquor were seized. Similarly, 688 cases have been registered in Cuttack and 683 people in possession of liquour  have been arrested and 4238 bottles of Foreign liquor (IMFL) and 25848 bottles of Illegally Distilled (ID) liquor were seized.

Further, 41 cases have been registered under Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Bhubaneswar and 67 persons were arrested with drugs. The police seized 655.722 kilogram Ganja, 833.13 grams Brown Sugar, one car, 12 mobile phones and Rs 6 ,43,340 cash. Similarly, nine cases have been registered in Cuttack and 16 people were arrested for drug possession. The police also seized 581.845 kilogram Ganja, 65 grams Brown Sugar and Rs 11,100 cash.

Sixty nine cases of possession of illegal fire arms have been registered in Bhubaneswar and 79 people have been arrested and 19 pistols, four revolvers and 79 ammunition were seized. In Cuttack, 36 such cases have been registered and 59 people arrested.  The police seized 27 pistols, one revolver and 91 ammunition.

Under Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, nine cases have been registered in Bhubaneswar, 38 accused arrested and 21 victims rescued. In Cuttack, one case have been registered, three accused arrested and one victim rescued.

In total 251 habitual offenders or criminals have been arrested or booked under section 110 of CrPC in Bhubaneswar and 452 in Cuttack. Further, 719 Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) have been executed in Bhubaneswar and 1,223 in Cuttack.

Under Orissa Urban Police (OUP) Act, 61,676 violators have been detected in Bhubaneswar and Rs 3,12,47,500 fine has been realized. In Cuttack, 23,613 violator have been detected and Rs 1,15,09,500 fine realized. Likewise, under Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1.69,816 violators have been detected in Bhubaneswar and Rs 1,76,18,900 fine has been realized and in Cuttack 1,45,024 violators detected and Rs 1,40,62,300 fine realized. Further, 121 MV PR has been submitted in Bhubaneswar and Nil in Cuttack.

Under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA, 914 violators have been detected in Bhubaneswar and Rs 92,850 fine has been realized and in Cuttack 4,738 violators detected and Rs 2,89,050 fine realized.
