Two injured following pre-poll violence in Balasore; 5 arrested

Balasore: Two persons were injured due to pre-poll violence in Chandipur area of Balasore district, late Sunday night.

While one of the two victims was identified as panchayat samity member Lokanath Dalei the identity of the other person is yet to be ascertained.

The victims were admitted to the Balasore DHH initially but as their condition deteriorated, the two were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment, Monday.

According to a source, after the conclusion of campaigning for the by-poll in Balasore Sadar Assembly Constituency, the police asked politicians and journalists of other districts to leave the area as part of Election Commission’s guidelines.

However, workers of one contesting party had received information that some members of another party were staying in a hotel of Chandipur area. As it is against the Model Code of Conduct, the workers rushed to the hotel before a dispute between the two groups turned violent.

Following the clash two persons including a politician were critically injured.

Chandipur Police have detained five persons Monday morning in this connection and a probe is underway.

Notably, Balasore Sadar and Tirtol assembly constituency go into by-election November 3.
