Bisoi: Tension ran high at Manada village following the death of two women after the van they were travelling in met with an accident near Manada on National Highway-49 near Bisoi in Mayurbhanj district Friday evening.
Four others including the driver sustained critical injuries.
The deceased were identified as Sahachari Behera and Sari Behera of Manada village.
According to reports, five women were returning in a Tata ACE van and the vehicle was parked near Kalinga College for some work.
The accident happened when a speeding truck hit the Tata ACE from the rear.
The truck fled the spot after the accident.
Locals immediately rushed to the spot, rescued the women and the driver, and admitted them at Manada community health centre.
The doctors declared Sahachari and Sari received dead.
The injured — Roibari Behera, Pramila Behera, Mamata Behera and driver Uttam Mohanta — were later shifted to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
Hundreds of local residents thronged the accident site and blocked the road, demanding compensation for the families of the dead and injured.
However, the blockade was withdrawn after the intervention of Manada police.
