Umerkote: The Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Umerkote community health centre (CHC) in Nabarangpur district has been adjudged as the best SNCU in the state.
In a notification, the state Health and Family Welfare department informed Friday that the CHC’s SNCU has been placed at the top for its best performances in 15 fields.
The assessment to find out the best SNCU in the state is held once in every three months. The Umerkote CHC’s SNCU was in second position last time.
The SNCU at Umerkote CHC was started in 2014. It caters to villages under Umerkote, Raighar, Jharigaon, Chandahandi blocks. The SNCU has 12 beds. But over 20 newborns are brought to the facility on a daily basis. Those newborns suffering from Jaundice, low birth weight and respiratory problems are being treated here.
The SNCU is equipped with all necessary facilities like oxygen, warmer and phototherapy etc. for babies.
Most importantly, the SNCU has also a Kangaroo Mother Care Unit where at a time seven mothers can breastfeed their children.
Three Covid-19 infected children are presently undergoing treatment at the facility. SNCU head and senior paediatrician Dr Santosh Kumar Panda informed that these infected children are being treated at special cabins.
Local intellectuals are of the opinion that the SNCU of Umerkote CHC is performing well for Dr Panda and 10 staff nurses are working dedicatedly for it. This is why it has been adjudged as the best SNCU in the state, they observed.
